I had a beautiful diamond ring given to me by my husband for our engagement. I still have the ring but I had to have some minor alterations on it. One of the small diamonds became loose with the passing of time so I took it to the jewellers to have it re set.

After paying 800 dollars for the work I was still disappointed with the result. What disappointed me most was that it no longer looked like my original diamond. The problem is I have no way of proving that it is or it isn't.

The ring was with the jeweller for some weeks while he worked on it  so he had plenty of opportunity to switch it for a less opulant stone even a fake one.  It somehow is no longer the same ring with the same sentimental attachment.

I am wondering if anyone else has experienced anything like this whgen getting a special piece of jewellery modified.
I would love to hear from you if you have and also what you did about it.

I have never been really attached to any pieces of jewellery other than that ring and a pearl necklace my hubby gave me as a wedding gift.  That too came to grief as while we were out when the children we younger I came home to find the string of pearls was broken and only a few remained. I have not been able to find the rest.
Perhaps for me costume jewellery should be the order of the day as the real thing seems to be doomed.
