- Australias largest pink diamond has been unearthed by Rio Tinto at its Argyle mine in Western Australia. It is a 12 .6 carat diamond thought to be the one of the most valuable diamonds in the world. Rare pink diamonds can fetch around $1,000,000 per carat making this one worth over 12 million dollars. This rare find will be cut and polished over the next few weeks before being showcased around the world then offered for tender. Pink diamonds such as this can reach prices 20 times that of the traditional white diamonds.
It will be sought after by the very rich and famous, and no doubt there will be a lot of strong competition to see who gets to keep this rare stone.
The cut and polish process will take up to 10 days to complete and will be done by one of Rio Tintos employees.
You can only imagine the pressure he will be under, handling this rarest and most valuable of gems. What if he makes a slip up and loses it or cracks it while working on it? The risk of theft or sabotage would be huge. I have to say even the thought of doing that work would make me nervous.
A beautiful rare pink diamond is about to be tested for its value. We will wait anxiously to hear the final bid.
